Parents: Hughes and Susan Marchant met in France, where Hughes had lived all his life and Susan was traveling after graduating from Hogwarts. Hughes had graduated from Beaxbatons Academy of Magic three years before meeting Susan.
Siblings:
Julia’s twin brother Isaac, though very fond of Julia, could not be more different from her. While Julia is shy and sensible, Isaac is friendly as can be and will take on any dare.
Julia’s younger sister Margret is clever and sweet like Julia, but daring like Isaac. She shares Julia’s small stature and soft features, but she is surprisingly audacious and certainly not shy.
Other Family:
Julia has cousins in both France and the UK to whom she writes every once in a while.
Personal History:
Julia was born only six minutes before her brother Isaac and three years before her sister Margo in Saint-Etienne France. She was always a very bright girl, and learned to read when she was only four. By the time she was six, she would be showing signs of magical ability and by the time she was eight, controlling it. She spent most of her early childhood with her family, rarely playing with any children her age aside from her brother and sister. Her parents became worried that her social skills were not developing and enrolled her in ballet class at age five. Julia enjoyed Ballet very much, but proved to be painfully shy and rarely spoke in class, except to her instructors.
When she was seven years old, Julia’s mother was offered a job with the ministry of Magic and the whole family moved to Manchester England, where her mother had grown up. Julia and her siblings picked up English very quickly, but still had heavy accents. As she was exposed to more and more magic in England, Julia developed a thirst for knowledge that her home and family could not satisfy. She began pouring through spellbooks she found around the house, and even mastering some spells by her eighth birthday.
When Julia began expressing interest in attend muggle school, her parents sent her to boarding school in London where she would study Ballet and normal muggle academics. She excelled in both and quickly rose to the top of her class, but became increasingly bored with each moment she wasn’t allowed to practice using her magic. She had only a few friends, as most of the other children didn’t want to make friends with a brainy French girl who spent most of her time reading. When her Hogwarts letter arrived, Julia decided without hesitation to give up Ballet and go to Hogwarts where she could study magic and do what she loved.
Character Traits
Personality: Julia has always been extremely bright and can usually be found buried in a book, usually pertaining to some kind of magic. Reading and writing have always been her favorite hobbies since she learned how, and books were often a substitute for friends when she was very young. Since age eight, Julia proved to be a very talented witch, learning simple charms from books she found lying around and attempting much more difficult ones, which often resulted in damage to household furniture. She is generally a kind and sweet little girl, but can sometimes become frustrated with those who are not as intelligent as she is and lash out at them a bit. She often becomes annoyed with her brother, for example, when they are working together on schoolwork. Her few friends at school are all smart and bookish like her, so Julia doesn’t usually have this problem.
Julia has always been at the top of her class in muggle school, but she often becomes bored with the material she has to learn. Muggle history and science became the very bane of her existence in school. Although Julia possesses intelligence well beyond most children her age, she often becomes uninterested if she doesn’t find the subject to be exciting. Fortunately, Julia finds all branches of magic to be very engaging.
Despite her impressive intelligence, Julia has always been painfully shy and has had trouble making friends in new situations. She can barely hold a conversation with somebody she doesn’t know well, so the person on the other side of the exchange has to do most of the work in getting to know Julia. It takes her quite a while to get comfortable around new people, and even longer to trust them, but once you get Julia to open up, all the effort is well worth it. Julia is bright, animated, and entertaining when she gets around people she really knows well. She can be witty, funny, and generally amusing.
Strengths: Transfiguration, Charms, and Potions are Julia’s top subjects, but she performs reasonably well in her other lessons.
Weaknesses: Julia has trouble in Care of Magical Creatures and Defense Against the Dark Arts. Her performance in Divination is absolutely dreadful.
Other Information
Pets: A Barn Owl named Francis that she shares with Isaac
Wand: Willow & Pheonix Feather, 8 ½ inches
Role-play Example:
Julia waited anxiously with her fellow first years outside the Great Hall, where they would soon be sorted into their houses. After waiting her whole life for this moment, it wasn’t at all what Julia had imagined as a child. Since she had known what Hogwarts was, she had imagined her older self as very confident, sure of herself, and quite a bit taller when she arrived at Hogwarts. She pictured herself confidently showing the other students the spells she had mastered on her own, impressing everyone and becoming instantly popular. But she was the same shrinking violet she had always been on her first night at Hogwarts, and she was still shorter than everybody else. Her skinny legs were shaking out of control, as they usually did when she was nervous.
She couldn’t understand how her brother Isaac could be laughing and shouting with a group of rowdy looking first year boys when she was close to fainting. Isaac was tall, good looking, and naturally popular. He had no trouble making friends, as everybody seemed to want to know him. Julia, on the other hand, was tiny, shy, and frightened. Like Isaac, she attracted people at first glance, but as soon as they tried to strike up a conversation with her, they lost interest in her. She had never been very good in situations like this, and being so nervous about the sorting only made her usual butterflies far worse. She would be alright with just about any house she was placed in, but what if she and Isaac were separated? They had been best friends since birth, and he was a bit of a security blanket to Julia. After all, despite being very fond of each other, they were quite different, so why should they be in the same house? Julia’s mind raced with thoughts of life without her brother. She wouldn’t make any friends, and she would be an outcast, she thought nervously. Finally, the towering wooden doors swung open to reveal what a stunningly large and beautiful hall overflowing with the voices of hundreds of excited students, glad to be back at their home away from home.
The first years around her all marveled at the huge room, lit by hundreds of candles that seemed to be suspended in mid air. Julia considered what kind of spells had been put on them to make them float, but was distracted when she looked more closely at the ceiling. It was sprinkled with glittering stars, a velvety black night sky, and a crescent moon just like the one outside the castle. A stool with a ragged looking hat was placed at the front of the Hall, and the excited chatter of the students quickly died down to whispers, mostly about the first years now standing nervously just inside the doorway. Julia’s heart began pounding in her chest, and she could feel her palms begin to sweat. She knew it was time.
